Germany

Castles, Christmas markets and thoughtful cities.

Germany rewards a slow wander, medieval old towns, hilltop castles and cosy cafés tucked down cobbled lanes. Nuremberg is a favourite of ours, from the Kaiserburg looking out over red rooftops to the winding streets of the Altstadt.

Highlights

  • Climbing up to Nuremberg's Kaiserburg castle
  • Cobbled lanes and gabled houses in the Altstadt
  • Christmas markets, glühwein and lebkuchen
  • Long, thoughtful walks between city landmarks

A few honest tips

  • Wrap up warm in winter, the wind cuts through the old town squares.
  • Trains between German cities are fast and comfy, book ahead on Deutsche Bahn for the best fares.
