Amsterdam After Dark
Canals, reflections and gabled houses lit up against a Dutch night sky.
Amsterdam is one of those cities that quietly gets under your skin. By day it hums with bicycles, coffee stops and museum queues, but it's after dark that it really comes into its own. The gabled houses light up one by one, the canals turn to mirrors, and the whole city slows down into something a bit more magical.
We love wandering the canals in the evening with no real plan, just following the water and the reflections. A little boat moored somewhere, a warm window here, a bridge lined with bikes there, it all adds up to that unmistakable Amsterdam feeling.
What we love about Amsterdam
- Late-evening canal walks when the houses glow
- Cycling through the Jordaan with no agenda
- A boat trip at dusk as the lights come on
- Cosy brown cafés and slices of Dutch apple pie
A few comfy tips
- ✦Book museum tickets online in advance, walk-up queues can eat half a day.
- ✦The trams and metro are quick and easy, get a day pass if it's raining.
- ✦Wander the canals after dinner, it's a completely different city at night.
